Ep 61 - Where the Deer and the Antelope Play

Most people know Nick Offerman as the actor who played Ron Swanson, the ultra libertarian parks director on Parks and Recreation. We discussed another book of his a little while back that he wrote with his wife, Megan Mullally, as well as the Audible exclusive books he has done. While the title of his newest book lets you know he will be discussing he thoughts on things he is passionate about, like the environment and hiking, it doesn’t really clue you in on some of his other thoughts he will be sharing, like his political views. Let’s just say if you don’t lean a particular way in your political thinking, you might want to pass this one up.

Next books will be:

June - Infinite by Jeremy Robinson

July - Half Share by Nathan Lowell

August - Ravenport by Nathan Lowell

Host: Eugene Stephens

Guest: Kris Andrew, Ray Andrew, Jennifer Hetzel

Ep 60 - Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone

We’ve been doing this geeky book club for over two years and we are just now doing a Harry Potter book. We should be ashamed… but we’re not. So let us jump into the flagship book that launched a tidal wave of copy cats and reshaped not only how the book industry looked at YA fiction, but also created an entire media empire that is still beloved by the fans to this day; even if the author isn’t.

Next books will be:

May - Where the Dear and the Antelope Play by Nick Offerman

June - Infinite by Jeremy Robinson

July - Half Share by Nathan Lowell

August - Ravenport by Nathan Lowell

Host: Eugene Stephens

Guest: Kris Andrew, Ray Andrew, Shaun McLaren

Ep 58 - Quarter Share

This month we start on a series Shaun introduced us to that immediately grabbed us and wouldn’t let go. Quarter Share, the first in the Trader’s Tale from The Golden Age of the Solar Clipper (that’s a mouth full), follows a Ishmael Wong as he gets a job on a space faring trading ship and grows into the position. Along the way he finds he enjoys the work, his co-workers and his new life. That’s it. No space battles or aliens trying to kill everyone. Sounds rather mundane… and you’ll love every minute of it.

March - New Spring by Robert Jordan

Ep 53 - Project Hail Mary

Andy Weir blew everyone away with his first book The Martian. So when his newest book was a return to space, we were excited to read it. But it wasn’t what we were expecting… in a great way. This month, we’re reading Project Hail Mary and discussing why it felt so much like one of our favorite book series; for obvious reasons. Our next book will be Salem’s Lot by Stephen King.

Ep 49 - Escape from Virtual Island / More Bedtime Stories for Cynics / Heads Will Roll

This month we’re doing something a little different. Not only are we discussing three books instead of one, we’re discussing three free books that come with an Audible subscription. The first is Escape from Virtual Island by John Lutz and read by Paul Rudd, Jack McBrayer, Jane Krakowski and a top notch cast. When a guest goes missing in the virtual simulation, a group of employees has to go in and try to track him down. The second is More Bedtime Stories for Cynics by several authors and read by Nick Offerman, Sir Patrick Stewart, Jane Lynch and more top notch celebrities. What happens when you strip out all of the kid friendly parts of a bedtime story? You are left with extremely weird, adult humor. Finally we discuss Heads Will Roll by Kate McKinnon & Emily Lynne and read by Kate McKinnon, Emily Lynne, Tim Gunn, Peter Dinklage and even more awesome people. An evil queen has to scheme to keep control of her kingdom when the peasants start talking about something called an “election.” Next month we are reading Greenlights by Matthew McConaughy.

Ep 41 - How to Be Antiracist

While the Coronavirus rages on in the United States, another firestorm has taken the spotlight, again. The death of George Floyd has reignited the #blacklivesmatter movement and evolved to encompass the #defundthepolice hashtag as well. All of this is centered around race relations and how we treat people who are different from us. So this month we are reading How to Be Antiracist in an attempt better understand how we can treat everyone the same; with empathy and understanding. Next month we will read Star Wars Aftermath Empire’s End by Chuck Wendig.

Ep 35 - Bobiverse Books 2 and 3 - For We Are Many, All These Worlds

If you’ve read the first book in the Bobiverse series, We are Legion (We Are Bob), I’m sure you’ve also read books 2 and 3 as the story moves seamlessly between them and doesn’t wrap up until book 3. So we’re finishing our review of the books together as they are nearly impossible to separate. We have to wrap up our review before we interview the author, Dennis E. Taylor, next week so let’s check in with the Bobs. Author interview with Dennis E. Taylor.
